Review of Await Your Reply

Await Your Reply by Dan Chaon My rating: 2 of 5 stars I read this book for a fiction seminar class. It was readable, and not much more than that. The bad: First, I found the constant, nested flashbacks extremely annoying. Half the time I forgot what was happening in the timeline of the book because I was buried in some flashback that went on for a chapter and a half. Second, I had the “twist” figured out by the time I finished chapter four. For a book that had the twist so hyped, that’s a letdown. I kept waiting to be amazed by some huge revelation that just never came....

Review of Butterfly Tattoo

Butterfly Tattoo by Deidre Knight My rating: 5 of 5 stars Wow. Just wow. Did I say wow already? The best book I’ve read so far this year, without reservation. Let me elaborate, because I think it’s necessary. I don’t usually read Contemporary Romance. It’s just not my thing. They are formulaic and boring to me. This is not that book. The characters are deep and damaged. The pain that haunts Michael leaps off the pages and wrenches the heart. Honestly, I’ve never read so much of a book with tears in my eyes. If there is any downside to this book, it’s that...

Review of Night Pleasures/Night Embrace

Night Pleasures/Night Embrace by Sherrilyn Kenyon My rating: 4 of 5 stars I can’t believe it took me this long to pick up these books. The name Sherrilyn Kenyon is practically synonymous with Paranormal Romance. I saw this two for one bundle, and figured I’d try out the pair to see what all the fuss was about. The experience left me largely torn. There were some wonderful aspects of these books, and one really bad facet that made me want to throw things. What I liked: The characters. I dug them, a lot. In fact, I think if anything keeps me coming back to this series, it will be...

Review of Siren Song

Siren Song by Stephanie Draven My rating: 4 of 5 stars Siren Song a nice, quick read with an interesting world that I want to learn more about. I liked Chloe as a main character. Her frustration with how to get over her troubled past really worked, and I found the interaction between her and Alexandros funny and interesting. I enjoyed the story, but it didn’t seem quite complete to me. I felt like it needed a bit more development on what exactly these characters are. There was a lot of hinting at more behind the curtain, but not very much displaying of what it was. For me, this one is...

Review of Beneath the Surface of Things

Beneath the Surface of Things by Kevin Wallis My rating: 5 of 5 stars In a word, Beneath the Surface of Things is amazing. This collection of twenty five horror stories is the best I’ve read in a long time in this genre. Kevin Wallis makes the ugly and the terrifying come alive with his writing. His stories have a complexity that I really enjoyed and went way beyond the simply scary. Of all the stories, “Mary Burns” was my favorite, and is a perfect example of what Kevin Wallis does right. There’s a depth of character, layered in quick strokes but with unquestionable...

Review of Easy A

Posted by on Aug 4, 2011 | 7 comments

I’ve had a Movie Review category on this blog for a long time, but I’ve never used it. There’s no real reason why. I just never got around to feeling strongly enough about a movie to bang out some words. What cinematic masterpiece has broken this trend? Easy A. Go ahead and get the giggles out now. It’s okay. Seriously. I’ll wait. Done? Okay, down to business then. Why I was pretty sure I was going to not like this movie: It’s an unapologetic teen movie. Anybody who knows me even slightly knows that I’m not a fan of most things teen. The overwrought...
