Review of Dis

Posted by on Jul 24, 2011 | 3 comments

Dis by Margo Lerwill My rating: 5 of 5 stars Dis is a fabulous introduction to an Urban Fantasy world inhabited by spirits, ancient gods, and other mysterious forces. Colbie is an interesting character already, and I hope there is more in store from her. Norse mythology is a favorite of mine and it fits wonderfully into the overall mash-up of myths that make up this world. This short story leaves the reader in the perfect place, with a resolution and more questions to drive the need to read more. I’ll be waiting in line to pick up the next one from this author! Teeth: A Fable by Shana Hammaker My rating: 4 of 5 stars Disclaimer: I received this copy for free via a giveaway by the author. A horror tale told in a great voice and with just the right twist of dark humor. Harley is a sympathetic main character that you grow to understand as events unfolds. Overall, an awesome bite of superior storytelling. View all my...

Review of These Hellish Happenings

Posted by on Jul 4, 2011 | Comments Off on Review of These Hellish Happenings

These Hellish Happenings by Jennifer Rainey My rating: 5 of 5 stars I have honestly not been so pleasantly surprised by a book in quite some time. I expected a funny vampire story and that’s really about all. What I got was an intensely amusing, quirky story that I had a very difficult time putting down. This isn’t your typical vampire story, not by a long shot. Jack is an unlikely hero, and that somehow just makes me love him more. He has a delightfully dry sense of humor and the voice he brings to this story is wonderful. He’s just a guy, trying to make his way through...

Review of Immortalis Carpe Noctem

Immortalis Carpe Noctem by Katie Salidas My rating: 4 of 5 stars In the interest of full disclosure, I received this copy of Immortalis Carpe Noctem for free via a giveaway. I also have more than a passing acquaintance with Katie Salidas. She and I have been trading critiques back and forth for a few months now on yet to be published works. If anything, I believe that familiarity will make my appraisal of her writing more harsh, but I wanted to mention it. Now that all the boring, official stuff is out of the way, I can get down to the business of vampires. There’s a lot about the...

Review of Matchmakers 2.0

Matchmakers 2.0 by Debora Geary My rating: 4 of 5 stars Okay, I should preface this by saying that this is not at all a genre that I read frequently. I’m not much for this type of story as a general rule. It’s well-written and I liked her writing style. Parts made me laugh out loud and there are some great lines. Overall, it was thoroughly enjoyable. If you want conflict or tension, you’re in the wrong place. A light, snappy read is the best way to describe it. View all my...

Review of The Righteous

Posted by on May 28, 2011 | 2 comments

The Righteous by Michael Wallace My rating: 4 of 5 stars Honestly, I did not go into The Righteous thinking that I would find it interesting. It was an impulse buy and I thought I’d read a few chapters while waiting at the doctor’s office or something and then likely put it down. I was so wrong. Immediately I was intrigued by what is a very foreign world, though it resides in the same country that I do. I have no idea if what goes on in this story is based on actual communities or not, but that doesn’t matter to me in the slightest. This is a fantastic story, told with...
