Review of By the Book

By the Book by Scarlett Parrish My rating: 4 of 5 stars I’m of two minds about this book. I liked it. I really did. There’s a beautiful seduction as the main storyline that I adored and is probably one of the better ones I’ve read lately. At the same time the ending left me with some not so very nice feelings. Most of the time I wanted to smack some sense into Reece. Daniel and Georgia were both wonderful characters, but of course Daniel stole the show, as you know he will from the very first page. There just seemed to be way too much angst most of the time and I felt like...

Review of Awaken Me Darkly

Posted by on Dec 30, 2011 | Comments Off on Review of Awaken Me Darkly

Awaken Me Darkly by Gena Showalter My rating: 4 of 5 stars I was so excited when I found this book. It’s a SciFi Urban Fantasy! Would that be urban SciFi then? I’m not sure. Awaken Me Darkly has what readers have come to expect from the UF genre, lots of action and a kick ass hero, in this case Alien Hunter Mia Snow. The author does a nice job setting up the twist, which is something that some of the faster paced stories have trouble with. The science fiction aspects, high technology and aliens, were well fleshed out and really added to the story. I would have enjoyed a little...

My Favorite Reads 2011 Edition

Posted by on Dec 25, 2011 | 2 comments

Hello! Welcome to my Best Reads of 2011 list, just in time for filling up your eReader of choice after the holidays. Because my reading tastes are broad, I’m picking one book for each genre I’ve read this year. I’ll link to the book on Goodreads and give a quick reason you need to pick it up. Horror Burden Kansas by Alan Ryker It’s bloody and exciting, a definite must read if you’re into the horror vampire scene. The main character is a cowboy vampire hunter, that’s all I’ve got to say. The sequel to this thrilling read, Blood Tells True, just came out, so you could pick up both on the same...

Review of Last Night at the Lobster

Last Night at the Lobster by Stewart O’Nan My rating: 4 of 5 stars Boy, this is really a book I’d give half stars to if I could. I did enjoy the story, though I never thought I would. Manny is an artfully drawn, compelling character. The mundane details of a day in his life at a Red Lobster don’t drag the way you’d think because it’s all seen through the lens of his final nostalgic day. There’s an unrequited love, and a battle with a snow blower. What more can you ask for? I’m kicking in the other half star, just because I have a little crush on...

Review for A Visit from the Goon Squad

A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan My rating: 3 of 5 stars I read this for a Seminar in Fiction class. Unlike some of the other books I’ve read for this class, this one I’ve enjoyed. I’m conflicted about what rating to give this book, however. For me, the ending was not satisfying. I won’t go into details, because I hate to spoiler, but that hurt an otherwise really great story, for me anyway. This is a novel made of short stories, which is an interesting concept. At first I was a little put off by the changing writing style and point of view, but I quickly...

Review of The Breaker’s Concubine

Posted by on Nov 15, 2011 | Comments Off on Review of The Breaker’s Concubine

The Breaker’s Concubine by Ann Mayburn My rating: 4 of 5 stars I’ll admit it. The cover got me. I’m not too proud to say it. Quite often when I read erotic stories I’m underwhelmed with the plot. I mean I understand that it isn’t supposed to be plot heavy, because that’s not the point, but I like to have some reason for the story to exist beyond the sex. In this regard, The Breaker’s Concubine is more fulfilling than most. Maybe it’s because I’m craving Sci-Fi lately, but I really enjoyed the political space intrigue aspect of this story....
